Server Based Networking --
A networking system that uses server / client technologies to share resources over a network

Server: A computer, which provides some service for other computers, connected to it via a network. The most common example is a file server, which has a local disk and services request from remote clients to read and write files on that disk.

Client: A general-purpose computer designed to be used by one person at a time, which is connected to a network of other computers and uses the shared services provided by the server.

Some advantages of a server-based system may include:

Security - each person accessing the network will require a valid user name and password. Each person connecting to the network can be given access or limited access to shared resources.

Mobility - each person with an account on that server has the ability to access their files (e-mail, documents, spreadsheets etc.) from any computer on the network. Each person may have storage on the server which all-personal information and data can be stored.

Shared data - information may be stored on one central server. This information may be made available to any one who requires this information. Such information may be in the form of a shared database, documentation or spread sheets.

Shared hardware - printers, Fax, modems, etc. can be shared through out the network, reducing the need for redundant and expansive hardware.

Shared Software - programs like Microsoft office may be stored on the server, which in turn serves these programs out to its clients. Major programs can now be easily and quickly upgraded and configured from one central computer as well as reducing the required storage space on each client computer. This will also allow the person to move from computer to computer and still have access to the programs they use every day.
